Manhunt Underway After Couple Fatally Shot While Hiking with Children in Arkansas Park

Arkansas – A peaceful family hike turned into a tragic nightmare when a couple was fatally shot while walking with their two young children in the scenic Ouachita National Forest. Authorities have launched a full-scale manhunt to locate the suspect responsible for the brutal killings.
The victims, identified as Steven and Lisa Murphy, both in their early 30s, were found dead late Saturday evening near a popular trail in the remote area of the forest. Their two children, aged 6 and 9, were found physically unharmed but deeply traumatized. They are now in protective custody with child welfare services.
According to Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the family was on a weekend hike when they were attacked. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots around 5:30 p.m., prompting a 911 call from another group of hikers who later discovered the bodies.
“This is a deeply disturbing and senseless act,” said Sheriff Daniel Wright during a press conference. “We are doing everything in our power to bring this suspect to justice and ensure the safety of our community and visitors to the park.”
The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5’10”, with dark hair, last seen wearing a camouflage jacket and carrying a rifle. Law enforcement agencies, including the Arkansas State Police and U.S. Forest Service, have deployed drones, K-9 units, and helicopters in the area.
Investigators believe the attack was not random and are looking into whether the suspect had any prior connection to the victims. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the park until further notice and to report any suspicious activity.
The Murphy family was visiting the park from their home in Little Rock and were known to be avid nature lovers. Friends and relatives have expressed shock and heartbreak over the tragedy.
“This is just devastating,” said a family friend. “They were kind, adventurous, and completely devoted to their children.”
The community has organized a candlelight vigil for the victims, scheduled for Tuesday evening at a local church.
Police are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at (870) 555-0142. A reward of $50,000 has been offered for information leading to an arrest.
